Quality versus Quantity
સહસ્સવગ્ગો આપણને શીખવે છે કે અર્થહીન શબ્દો, ખાલી ધાર્મિક વિધિઓ અને લાંબા પરંતુ અજ્ઞાન જીવન કરતાં, સાચી સમજણની એક ક્ષણ અથવા એક અર્થપૂર્ણ શબ્દનું મૂલ્ય ક્યાંય વધારે છે.
सहस्समपि चे वाचा, अनत्थपदसंहिता।
एकं अत्थपदं सेय्यो, यं सुत्वा उपसम्मति॥
અર્થહીન (નિરર્થક) શબ્દોથી બનેલા હજારો વાક્યો કરતાં; એક અર્થપૂર્ણ શબ્દ વધુ સારો છે, જેને સાંભળીને વ્યક્તિ શાંત (સ્થિર) થઈ જાય છે.
Rather than a thousand sayings, composed of meaningless words; Better is one meaningful saying, hearing which, one is calmed [is cooled, is settled].
सहस्समपि चे गाथा, अनत्थपदसंहिता।
एकं गाथापदं सेय्यो, यं सुत्वा उपसम्मति॥
અર્થહીન શબ્દોથી બનેલી હજારો ગાથાઓ કરતાં; એક ગાથાપદ વધુ સારું છે, જેને સાંભળીને વ્યક્તિ શાંત થઈ જાય છે.
Rather than a thousand verses, composed of meaningless words; Better is one line of verse, hearing which, one is calmed.
यो च गाथा सतं भासे, अनत्थपदसंहिता।
एकं धम्मपदं सेय्यो, यं सुत्वा उपसम्मति॥
જો કોઈ અર્થહીન શબ્દોથી બનેલી સો ગાથાઓ બોલે; તેના કરતાં ધર્મનું એક પદ વધુ સારું છે, જેને સાંભળીને વ્યક્તિ શાંત થઈ જાય છે.
Rather than a hundred verses, composed of meaningless words; Better is one saying of the Dhamma [teachings of the Buddha that point to the nature of reality, the ultimate truth], hearing which, one is calmed.
यो सहस्सं सहस्सेन, सङ्गामे मानुसे जिने।
एकञ्च जेय्यमत्तानं, स वे सङ्गामजुत्तमो॥
ભલે કોઈ વ્યક્તિ યુદ્ધમાં હજારો લોકો પર હજાર વખત વિજય મેળવે; છતાં જો તે માત્ર પોતાના પર વિજય મેળવે, તો તે જ ખરેખર યુદ્ધમાં સર્વોચ્ચ વિજેતા છે.
Even if one were to conquer a thousand men, with a thousand others in battle; Yet if one conquers oneself alone, that one is indeed the unsurpassed conqueror in battle.
अत्ता हवे जितं सेय्यो, या चायं इतरा पजा।
अत्तदन्तस्स पोसस्स, निच्चं सञ्ञतचारिनो॥
અન્ય લોકો પર વિજય મેળવવા કરતાં, પોતાની જાત પર વિજય મેળવવો ખરેખર વધુ સારો છે; કારણ કે જે વ્યક્તિએ પોતાની જાતને કાબૂમાં રાખી છે, તે હંમેશા સંયમપૂર્વક જીવે છે.
Self-conquest is truly better, than conquering others; For one who has mastered oneself [controlled oneself], continuously dwells with restraint.
नेव देवो न गन्धब्बो, न मारो सह ब्रह्मना।
जितं अपजितं कयिरा, तथारूपस्स जन्तुनो॥
ન તો કોઈ દેવ, ન ગંધર્વ, ન માર બ્રહ્મા સાથે; આવા વ્યક્તિના વિજયને હારમાં ફેરવી શકતા નથી, જેણે પોતાની જાત પર વિજય મેળવ્યો છે.
Neither a god, nor a celestial being, nor Māra [the ruler of the sensual realm] together with Brahma [God]; Can undo the victory of one who is like that, a person who has conquered themselves.
मासे मासे सहस्सेन, यो यजेथ सतं समं।
एकञ्च भावितत्तानं, मुहुत्तमपि पूजये।
सायेव पूजना सेय्यो, यञ्चे वस्ससतं हुतं॥
ભલે કોઈ વ્યક્તિ સો વર્ષ સુધી દર મહિને હજારનું દાન કરે; અને છતાં, જો તે માત્ર એક ક્ષણ માટે જ કોઈ જાગૃત વ્યક્તિનું સન્માન કરે; તો તે સન્માન સો વર્ષના યજ્ઞો કરતાં ખરેખર વધુ શ્રેષ્ઠ છે.
Even if one were to make a thousand offerings every month, consistently for a hundred years; And yet, if one were to honor for even a moment, a person who is awakened [who is self-developed]; That honor is indeed better, than a hundred years of offerings.
यो च वस्ससतं जन्तु, अग्गिं परिचरे वने।
एकञ्च भावितत्तानं, मुहुत्तमपि पूजये।
सायेव पूजना सेय्यो, यञ्चे वस्ससतं हुतं॥
ભલે કોઈ વ્યક્તિ સો વર્ષ સુધી જંગલમાં પવિત્ર અગ્નિની પૂજા કરે; અને છતાં, જો તે માત્ર એક ક્ષણ માટે જ કોઈ જાગૃત વ્યક્તિનું સન્માન કરે; તો તે સન્માન સો વર્ષના યજ્ઞો કરતાં ખરેખર વધુ શ્રેષ્ઠ છે.
Even if one were to attend to [worship, tend to] the [sacred] fire in the forest, for a hundred years, And yet, if one were to honor for even a moment, a person who is awakened; That honor is indeed better, than a hundred years of offerings.
यं किञ्चि यिट्ठं व हुतं व लोके, संवच्छरं यजेथ पुञ्ञपेक्खो।
सब्बम्पि तं न चतुभागमेति, अभिवादना उज्जुगतेसु सेय्यो॥
જે કંઈ આ વિશ્વમાં આપવામાં આવે કે અર્પણ કરવામાં આવે, જો કોઈ પુણ્ય મેળવવાની ઈચ્છાથી વર્ષભર તે અર્પણ કરે; તે બધું મળીને પણ ચોથા ભાગ જેટલું નથી થતું, અડગ (સીધા, સ્થિર) વ્યક્તિઓને કરાયેલ અભિવાદન તેનાથી શ્રેષ્ઠ છે.
Whatever is given or offered in the world, If one were to give that throughout the year, seeking merit [seeking spiritual wealth]; All of that does not come to a fourth part, of the honor given to the steadfast [upright, unswerving], which is indeed better.
अभिवादनसीलिस्स, निच्चं वुड्ढापचायिनो।
चत्तारो धम्मा वड्ढन्ति, आयु वण्णो सुखं बलं॥
જે વ્યક્તિ આદરભાવવાળી છે, અને નિયમિતપણે વડીલોનું સન્માન કરે છે; તેનામાં ચાર ગુણો વધે છે: આયુષ્ય, વર્ણ (સુંદરતા), સુખ અને બળ.
For one who is respectful, and regularly honors the elders; Four qualities grow: life span, beauty, contentment, and strength.
यो च वस्ससतं जीवे, दुस्सीलो असमाहितो।
एकाहं जीवितं सेय्यो, सीलवन्तस्स झायिनो॥
દુરાચારી અને વિચલિત થઈને સો વર્ષ જીવવા કરતાં; સદાચારી અને ધ્યાન કરનાર વ્યક્તિનું એક દિવસનું જીવન વધુ શ્રેષ્ઠ છે.
Even if one were to live a hundred years, unprincipled [without regard for ethical conduct] and distracted [with scattered attention]; Better is a single day of life, of a virtuous [ethical, moral] person who meditates.
यो च वस्ससतं जीवे, दुप्पञ्ञो असमाहितो।
एकाहं जीवितं सेय्यो, पञ्ञवन्तस्स झायिनो॥
અજ્ઞાની અને વિચલિત થઈને સો વર્ષ જીવવા કરતાં; સમજદાર (જ્ઞાની) અને ધ્યાન કરનાર વ્યક્તિનું એક દિવસનું જીવન વધુ શ્રેષ્ઠ છે.
Even if one were to live a hundred years, undiscerning [without wisdom] and distracted; Better is a single day of life, of a discerning (wise, insightful) person who meditates.
यो च वस्ससतं जीवे, कुसीतो हीनवीरीयो।
एकाहं जीवितं सेय्यो, वीरियमारभतो दळ्हं॥
આળસુ અને હીનવીર્ય (પ્રયત્ન વિનાના) થઈને સો વર્ષ જીવવા કરતાં; દ્રઢ પ્રયત્ન (સક્રિય પ્રયાસ) કરનાર વ્યક્તિનું એક દિવસનું જીવન વધુ શ્રેષ્ઠ છે.
Even if one were to live a hundred years, lazy [procrastinating, inactive person, indolent] and weak in effort [low in energy, lacking in endurance]; Better is a single day of life, of one who makes steady effort (actively engages).
यो च वस्ससतं जीवे, अपस्सं उदयब्बयं।
एकाहं जीवितं सेय्यो, पस्सतो उदयब्बयं॥
જે [ઘટનાઓનાં] ઉદય અને વિનાશને (ઉત્પત્તિ અને સમાપ્તિને) જોયા વિના સો વર્ષ જીવશે; તે કરતાં ઉદય-વિનાશને જોનારનું એક દિવસનું જીવન વધુ શ્રેષ્ઠ છે.
Even if one were to live a hundred years, without seeing arising and passing away [appearance and disappearance, formation and dissolution]; Better is a single day of life, of one who sees arising and passing away.
यो च वस्ससतं जीवे, अपस्सं अमतं पदं।
एकाहं जीवितं सेय्यो, पस्सतो अमतं पदं॥
જે અમૃત પદ (મૃત્યુહીન અવસ્થા, નિર્વાણ) ને જોયા વિના સો વર્ષ જીવશે; તે કરતાં અમૃત પદ જોનાર વ્યક્તિનું એક દિવસનું જીવન વધુ શ્રેષ્ઠ છે.
Even if one were to live a hundred years, without seeing the deathless state [epithet of Nibbāna]; Better is a single day of life, of one who sees the deathless state.
यो च वस्ससतं जीवे, अपस्सं धम्ममुत्तमं।
एकाहं जीवितं सेय्यो, पस्सतो धम्ममुत्तमं॥
જે ઉત્તમ ધર્મ (પરમ સત્ય) ને જોયા વિના સો વર્ષ જીવશે; તે કરતાં ઉત્તમ ધર્મ જોનાર વ્યક્તિનું એક દિવસનું જીવન વધુ શ્રેષ્ઠ છે.
Even if one were to live a hundred years, without seeing the ultimate truth [the ultimate nature of things]; Better is a single day of life, of one who sees the ultimate truth.
